Mission, TX - What began as a childhood dream and a journey built on perseverance, family support, and unwavering determination has now become a historic milestone for Palmview High School Volleyball.
La Joya ISD proudly celebrated Palmview High School senior Kylie Cantu as she officially signed a full scholarship offer to continue her academic and athletic career at Dallas College Mountain View, becoming the first student-athlete in Palmview High School history to sign to play collegiate volleyball.
Surrounded by family, teammates, coaches, and supporters, Cantu reflected on the significance of the moment and the journey that led her there.
“I feel fulfilled and like I have accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish and now even more so as I go to college,” said Cantu. “I am so grateful that I get to celebrate this huge accomplishment with everybody and I am so appreciative of everyone that came out to support me because I have dreamt of this moment since I was a kid!”
Cantu plans to pursue a degree in Exercise Science while continuing her volleyball career at the collegiate level.
A dedicated athlete since her early years, Cantu has been a varsity volleyball player since her freshman year and has helped lead the Palmview High School program through multiple successful seasons, including playoff appearances and district titles.
However, her journey to this signing was not without adversity.
Just as her senior season was set to begin, Cantu suffered a torn ACL on the very first day of school - a devastating setback that temporarily sidelined her from competition. Despite the challenge, Cantu remained determined throughout her recovery process, continuing to push forward with the support of her family and coaches.
For Palmview High School Head Volleyball Coach Margo Iglesias-Cantu, the moment carried both personal and program-wide significance.
“Today is such an emotional and historic moment for our program and for our family,” said Iglesias-Cantu. “Palmview High School has never had a collegiate volleyball signing, and to see Kylie become the first - while also being my bonus daughter - is something I can’t even fully put into words. I have watched her pour years of hard work, sacrifice, and heart into this sport. When she suffered her ACL injury, it would have been easy to give up, but she never did. She kept fighting, kept believing, and kept working toward this dream every single day. Watching her overcome so much and still earn this opportunity makes me unbelievably proud.”
Iglesias-Cantu explained that although college recruiters were unable to see Cantu compete in person during her recovery, video highlights and conversations about her work ethic, leadership, and talent ultimately earned the attention of Dallas College Mountain View.
“She had not yet been cleared to play, but I sent the coach videos of Kylie and spoke about the kind of athlete and person she is,” Iglesias-Cantu said. “The coach told me she had never signed a player without seeing them play in person, but based on Kylie’s film and everything she heard about her, she offered her a full scholarship. It was an incredible moment for our family and our program.”
Cantu also credited her family and coaching staff for helping her remain motivated throughout her journey.
“My coach is also my stepmom, and she has put her blood, sweat, and tears into this program,” Cantu said. “She has never failed us. Since she came here, we’ve known nothing but playoff appearances and district titles, and she has instilled perseverance in all of us.”
Cantu’s signing represents more than an individual accomplishment - it reflects the continued growth of Palmview High School Athletics and La Joya ISD’s commitment to empowering student-athletes to succeed both academically and athletically beyond graduation.
Through resilience, determination, and the support of an entire community, Cantu’s story now serves as an inspiration for future generations of Lobos student-athletes dreaming of reaching the next level.
